The way to free a common clog, without the use of dangerous chemicals, is to gently move the column of water, avoiding spirts and splashing, until the clog is worked free. In order to accomplish this, the first step is to create an airtight seal, and have a way to control, and move the water column.

The current methods of plunging are made difficult, in part, due to the need to create an effective seal, and their inability to do so.

The standard suction cup style plungers are often found in very unsanitary condition. 

They not only function poorly, but they also leave nasty, dirty, stains on the floor.

The classic plunger on a stick, is rigid and out dated in design. It does not flex to fit and create an effective seal. Its design is limited, as there are a wide variety of toilets, and only one shape on the end of that stick, as well as on the ends of all of the others. 

This causes splashing, and in some cases spirting, from around the failed seal. 

That splashing and spirting is unsanitary to say the least. There is also the issues with  the storage of these types of plungers. They either leave filthy rings on the floor, or hide, and store "whatever water" in a container that eventually contains some form of  human waste.

A bellows-style plunger looks a bit like an accordion along the outer edges of its bowl. 

This design allows for the plastic bowl to collapse and expand, much like the musical instrument does, as you apply pressure and pull back. This traps waste inside that later drips wherever the plunger is sitting. 

The seal is also often inadequate.

Another method is the use of compressed air. The extra pressure created by this method is also unsanitary, as it greatly increases the risk of splashing and spirting. The continuous, repeated use of high pressure could also cause expensive damage to piping systems over time.
